Developmental shifts toward structural explanations and interventions for social status disparities

چکیده

As part of their early “essentialist” intuitions, young children view intergroup differences as reflecting groups’ intrinsic natures. In the present study, we explore nature and development “structural” reasoning, or extrinsic circumstances. We introduced participants (n = 315; ages 5–6, 9–10, adults) to novel status disparities that could be attributed either personal structural causes. Disparities were verbally framed in intrinsic, neutral terms. assessed attributions by asking explain offer interventions for them. also participants’ status-based social preferences. found shifted from over development. Explanations correlated related same predictors (framing age) outcomes (social preferences), although consistently more than explanations. Implications essentialism, causal are discussed.

Social Variation, Social Explanations

T he relationship between aging and criminal activity has been noted since the beginnings of criminology. For example, Adolphe Quetelet (1831/1984) found that the proportion of the population involved in crime tends to peak in adolescence or early adulthood and then decline with age. In contemporary times, the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report (UCR) arrest data (1935–1997), particularly the Crime Inde...

A working hypothesis of the work reported in this paper is that simple explanations require simple reasoning. The approach to reasoning presented in this paper is minimalist: First, it precludes in...

We propose new definitions of (causal) explanation, using structural equations to model counterfactuals. The definition is based on the notion of actual cause, as defined and motivated in a companion paper. Essentially, an explanation is a fact that is not known for cer...
